Group: Bell Ringers
Definition: People who ring bells and practice bell ringing in Bath’s many church towers.
Reasons for selecting: The bell ringers of Bath continue a tradition that has made an impact on the character of the city for hundreds of years. The bells of Bath’s churches are not only rung for religious services and weddings but also to mark national celebrations or times of mourning. Bell ringing is open to anyone who wants to learn to ring, regardless of religion or belief, and the group welcomes guest bell ringers from around the world. As one bell ringer we met described, “Bath’s bells belong to people who hear them, they speak to the city”.
