Group: Community Volunteer Growers

Definition: Individuals who volunteer their time to grow produce for the benefit of the community.

Reasons for selecting: We were impressed with the dedication and hard work of the many different volunteer, community focused growing groups in Bath, who give up their time to nurture fruit, vegetables and livestock for the benefit of others and the environment. The groups have a DIY approach, using individual members’ skills and enthusiasm to drive forward new ideas and crops. The work is physically demanding, time consuming and takes place all year round, no matter what the weather is like.

As part of their project ‘Picture in the Paper’, artists LOW PROFILE searched for all of the people in Bath who volunteer their time to grow produce for the benefit of the community, bringing them together to make a professional photographic portrait of as many people in this group as possible.

The community volunteer growers portrait was one of 18 group photographs taken in November 2014, before being published in the Bath Chronicle and then put on permanent public display, in the new Centre for the Arts at the University of Bath when it opened in February 2015.
