Group: Roller Derby Skaters

Definition: Skaters based in Bath who play the sport of roller derby, a contact sport established and majoritively played by all female amateur teams, with men more recently setting up their own groups.

Reasons for selecting: We were attracted to the self organised and DIY nature of derby, with members of the team each contributing key roles to aid the running and organisation of their team training and bouts (matches). Derby is a challenging and physical sport, but is open to a wide range of people (aged 18+) and abilities.

As part of their project ‘Picture in the Paper’, artists LOW PROFILE searched for all of the people in Bath who play the sport of roller derby bringing them together to make a professional photographic portrait of as many people in this group as possible.

The roller derby skaters portrait was one of 18 group photographs taken in November 2014, before being published in the Bath Chronicle and then put on permanent public display, in the new Centre for the Arts at the University of Bath when it opened in February 2015.
